This unfortunately,  is not the case.  According to the Insurance Research Council, the estimated number of uninsured drivers is as high as 25% in some states.  In some states, it has also been found that uninsured drivers are more likely to be involved in an accident. If you or someone in your family is involved in an incident with a driver who is uninsured you or your family member will be liable for the damages, even if the accident is not your fault.  In some states your auto insurance carrier will do their best to recover expenses associated with the loss from the other driver, but these attempts are usually time consuming and involve some sort of litigation.  However you can protect yourself with uninsured motorist coverage (UM).
